Earnhardt Jr. Sponsor Update:

Budweiser Out, Monster Energy In????????

Since signing with Hendrick, the focus regarding Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s future has been on what number, sponsor, and colors he might be sporting for the next few years.

Regarding the number, it appears as though that subject is dead... the No. 8 will stay with DEI...

Though it won't be dead among those who follow Junior closely.

On the sponsor front, negotiations with Budweiser had seemed to stop when Anheuser-Busch was thought to be wondering if Junior had become a bit too old for the beer brand's target market.

But Forbes.com has some very interesting speculation straight from Wall Street.

According to the story, Anheuser-Busch may be preparing to buyout the company that owns Monster Energy - a drink they already redistribute. Monster Energy is a direct rival to Red Bull, and they've been targeting series where Red Bull already is.. such as a personal sponsorship with Paul Tracy in the Champ Car World Series, and rumors that the company may brand the entire team.

Thus, a possible link to NASCAR via the Bud parent.

The though is that with Monster Energy, Anheuser-Busch may be able to market with Dale Jr. in a way they never could with Budweiser.

As for Dale Earnhardt Jr., he had this to say when asked if there was any update on crew chiefs, car numbers, or sponsors for next season....

“No update.”

It's Monty's fault. He was not watching where he was going

The camera man was stationary and filming something else..

Free the #8 ( I think it's silly)

About the Free the 8 Campaign
The Free the 8 Campaign is a fan initiated effort, whose goal is for NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to be allowed to continue to use his #8 car number, currently assigned to DEI Motorsports, next year at his new team, Hendrick Motorsports. Both Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and his future car owner, Rick Hendrick, have stated that they would like to have the #8 to continue Jr.'s legacy in 2008. We, as supporting fans, and wanting everything our driver wants to make him happy in 2008, have devised a petition to make our wishes known to all parties involved: Brian France (CEO of NASCAR), Teresa Earnhardt (Car Owner at DEI), Rick Hendrick (Car Owner at Hendrick Motorsports), and even Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
The petition being used is a Certified Petition, where all IP addresses, dates, and times will be recorded, then sent to the above intended targets, as well as the Mass-Media, for review. Our hope is that, even if DEI will not free the #8, Brian France (NASCAR CEO) might step in to reassign the number to Hendrick Motorsports. For more information on the assignment of car numbers, the history of the #8 car, and why it is important to not only Dale Jr., but his fans as well, check out the
History of the #8 section. Also, make sure to check out and sign the petition.

Kyle Petty Cusses On National Television

Driver Matt Kenseth and Petty collided in the second lap in an accident that included driver Marc Goossens. TNT analyst Wally Dallenbach speculated Petty "had no clue" Kenseth was nosing in on him. On a replay of the view out of Petty's windshield, the driver-analyst seemed to confirm that: As Kenseth came into view, viewers heard a clear exclamation of surprise that seemed to come from Petty — "What the f—-!"

TNT's Bill Weber immediately apologized "for that language," and Petty, who stayed in the race and finished 39th, came back on-air to say that "was not the kind of excitement I wanted" and later apologized on-air for the accident.

Riding with Junior: Sonoma

Best Radio Chatter

Dale Jr. was easily one of the fastest cars on the track all afternoon - but it often took a lap or two on each restart for the Bud machine to really get to full-speed.

Dale Jr:
(during a yellow flag on lap 56 - after holding off eventual winner Montoya on several restarts): "Hell yeah! (to spotter Steve Hmiel): "If you've got Juan's spotter, tell him thanks for being patient with me. He makes me nervous on these restarts."

Hmiel:
"I'm with him. You're doing great. And now you've got the 41 car (Reed Sorenson) between you and him for this restart."

Dale Jr:
"We're quicker once we get going, but on the restarts he tries really hard to out-brake you in a straight line."

A few laps later, Dale Jr, reiterated his goal of a top-10 finish.

Dale Jr: (proudly) "Write this down - it's past halfway and I'm still in the top-10."

Tony Gibson (interim crew chief): "You're doin' great. You've got a top-two car based on lap times. Once the field spreads out, you can really show the speed."

When many cars pitted on lap 68 under a yellow-flag, Dale Jr. seemed shocked that the teams would gamble on fuel mileage with so many laps remaining:

Dale Jr: (surprised) "God dang!!"

Gibson: "We'll be OK."

Dale Jr: (still shocked) "They obviously think they can make it!"

Gibson: "Well, we can't make it from here - and we're a faster car than all of them. They'll need a ton of cautions to make it."

Dale Jr. Qualifies Third at Sonoma

ON HIS LAP:

"I just tried to get me a good solid lap in that would hopefully get me a top 15 or a top 10. I think we under credited ourselves because we didn't get a clean lap in practice. I didn't know what the car was capable of. I was really surprised the car was as quick as it was and that lap was as good as it was. I didn't make any mistakes but I think there was a whole lot more in the race car and in the speed. I'm really happy to qualify amongst the competitors that I did. That was pretty good for our team."

WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU SPED UP BY SLOWING DOWN?
"That's definitely the case. With the CoT, at all the oval races, if you pushed the car maybe a half a car length deeper into the corner you would have a pretty severe loss of a nose or if you tried to challenge the car to get more gas up off the corner, you would struggle increasingly worse than you would in the old car. Knowing that, you sort of have to just be real easy and real careful and not push the car. If you try to drive a corner just a little bit deeper it was a lot of tenths, a lot of time, off your lap. I was watching guys in qualifying losing four or five-tenths on just one corner with a little small mistake - good guys, good cars. So it's just all about maybe not so much trying to make each corner perfect, but just trying not to screw any one of them up really big. I went to a VIR test and we were really fast in that test. My entire outlook going into the test was just to run about 80 percent all day long to just try to gain data and not trying to really race the track or try to put down any massive laps. And we ended up running 80 percent all day and we were really fast. Anytime I seemed to try to get more out of the car, I would run slower and struggle getting the car around the corner. So I learned a lot at that test just about driving this car on the road courses and it worked out today."

WHOSE STRATEGY WAS IT TO THROTTLE BACK JUST A LITTLE BIT?
"Well it wasn't really a strategy. Just going to the test at Virginia, it's hot. You're there with the team. Obviously the drivers enjoy the tests a lot less than the teams do. But the guys, even though they're there to gain data, they're as miserable as we are. It's hot and it's just not a very comfortable environment. So we just went in with a list of things to try and said hey, we just need to get through this list and see what works and what doesn't. I had been practicing on the computer at VIR and in the game, you really have to be disciplined and not try to drive real hard and just try to drive smooth. That's what I did in the test and it worked awesome. I came here today and ran hard and slid around and screwed my laps up. I never got to really see how fast my car was because I kept pushing too hard. So I started to think back about the test and how we were successful with a more conservative approach. I don't have enough experience to go whipping around here like Robb y (Gordon) and some of guys. So just backing down a bit and being smooth and just try to get something in every once in a while it'll work out and you'll have a fast lap if you're lucky.

ON THE ADDITION OF THE SPLITTER GIVE YOU ANY CONCERN ABOUT BUSTING ONE ON A CURB?
"I don't have any concerns with it. We do get the splitter down toward the ground, but normally when you're approaching a curb or near a curb you're at the center of the corner and the car is not sealed on the ground at that point. But even if you do bust the side of a splitter off I don't think you're going to have a huge adverse affect on how your car drives or handles if you just knocked a corner off or shipped it up a little bit. I just try not to hit other cars. I think that's going to be the hardest part. The curbs are easy to miss (laughter). The other cars out there, I either lose control or mine or they lose control of theirs and we have a lot of calamity."

DOES IT MATTER THAT TWO OF THE BEST ROAD RACERS ARE STARTING THE RACE AT THE BACK OF THE FIELD, OR ARE YOU JUST RACING THE TRACK?
"I feel like with pit strategy, you'll have a great opportunity to pass a lot of cars on pit road. You have to sacrifice something to gain that. But for Jeff Gordon, as good a team as they are, they can overcome that. I haven't been able to put it all together yet. I just want to be able to stay out on the asphalt and not make any mistakes and get one in the bag and get a top 10 here. That's my goal."

YOU LOOK SO RELAXED AND SO HAPPY WITH ALL THE WEIGHT OFF YOUR BACK, IS THAT REFLECTIVE WITH YOUR DRIVING? DO YOU FEEL LOOSE AND ARE YOU JUST GOING FOR IT?
"No, not really. I was frustrated during practice. I was making a lot of mistakes during our mock runs for qualifying and just didn't get to see what my car was capable of. My car had an issue that I really couldn't diagnose or try to find what direction I needed to go. That was frustrating. I feel better when I'm at home and not at the race track. But when you're at the race track, the competitiveness inside you - you could have just won the lottery, it doesn't matter - you want to get the car to run a half second faster and you'd do about anything to get that done. You still have those things to deal with when it comes to your personality. But it has been easer. It has been a better time."

DO YOU FEEL STRESS TO PUT EXTRA EFFORT FORWARD? HAVE YOU GONE TO ANY DRIVING SCHOOLS LATELY?
"No, I haven't been to any driving schools. I've just been practicing on the computer a little bit. Man, the hard thing for me is just not making mistakes. I can't get to that next level where I start concentrating on track position and qualifying well and putting that effort in. My whole goal when I get here is can I make a clean lap as a driver? I can do it at Watkins Glen, but this track has so many technical corners and parts to it. I don't run here enough to acclimate myself and learn the course. Once I get here I spend the whole day basically just trying to get to where I can at least run one lap straight without too many issues. But tomorrow if we can have a good practice and have a car that is competitive and comfortable, we might be able to set some more goals for ourselves."

Bud Pole

Jamie McMurray outdrove the road-racing specialists and the rest of the contenders Friday to win his first pole in nearly two years.

McMurray posted his lap of 1 minute, 17.521 seconds (92.414 mph) on the 1.99-mile Infineon Raceway road course midway through the session, then had to wait for NASCAR's top qualifier Ryan Newman and former Formula One star Juan Montoya, both at the rear of the qualifying line, to try to knock him off.

24, 48 fail inspection

SONOMA, Calif. --

Gordon, Johnson won't practice or qualify on Friday

Nextel Cup points leader
Jeff Gordon and reigning series champion Jimmie Johnson were banned from on-track activities Friday, and their status for Sunday's event at Infineon Raceway was in jeopardy after NASCAR discovered illegal front-end modifcations in initial inspection.
The cars of neither Gordon, the defending race champion, nor Johnson will be allowed to practice or qualify Friday.
NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said both cars "failed the initial inspection ... as a result of body modifications found to be outside NASCAR tolerances. The front fender [of both cars] was modified outside of NASCAR regulations. They did not meet the C2 template inspection."
According to Poston, Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 and No. 25 cars, for
Kyle Busch and Casey Mears, passed inspections.
Poston added, "both teams have an opportunity to repair and resubmit their cars" for inspection up to the start of practice Saturday. "Assuming they pass inspection, they can practice [Saturday] and start at the rear of the field [Sunday]," he said.
"It's important to know this is a Car of Tomorrow penalty," Poston said of the short-term severity of the sanction. "The inspection process and NASCAR's response to Car of Tomorrow violations are going to be more severe.
"We're going to keep this car in check. It's important to know all cars in the field are starting out equal and have the ability to win the race."
Poston said both teams' crew chiefs, Steve Letarte on the No. 24 and Chad Knaus on the No. 48, would be allowed to supervise the repairs, and at this point, NASCAR had no plans to immediately confiscate the cars.
The decision on further penalties would be made next week, Poston said.

Infineon Raceway Info (On Sunday June 24th)

The tracks I used to hate the most are the road courses. Boring parades at low speeds with very little passing. Yawn. You get one or two pit stops, and they're guaranteed to be under yellow because of the wrecks. And it took about three year to understand about the race so now I liked the road course

Idiot fans @ the race

They threw the beer cans into the track at Talladega Superspeedway last year in October. Dennis and I were there. Unbelieveable what they did. What happen was that the Fans were angry about Dale Jr. wrecked his car by Brian Vicker #25. (See in header picture excact what look like at the race) Both of us had great time camping out and the race.
